Diversity grant funds North Carolina Health Careers Access
Program Recruitment and Enrichment Seminars
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina Health Careers Access
Program (NC-HCAP) hosted three recruitment and enrichment seminars
at UNC this spring; funding for this new NC-HCAP initiative was
made possible through the UNC Diversity Incentive Fund grant sponsored
by the UNC Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.
The UNC Diversity Incentive Fund was created in 2005 to encourage
faculty, staff and students to offer educational programs, conduct
research projects and develop campus-based initiatives that promote
cross cultural learning and knowledge.
These skill-building and informational seminars offered helpful
tips and strategies to help students become more competitive applicants
for graduate and professional school and exposed UNC students to
various health career programs not currently offered at the University.
Seminar topics included: writing an effective personal statement,
effective interviewing tips and strategies, and financial aid for
graduate and professional school as well as an overview of the Duke
University Physician Assistant (PA) Program and career opportunities
in forensic biology.
The NC-HCAP Ambassadors, an elite group of UNC pre-professional
health sciences students, hosted the seminars.
“It’s imperative for students to gain awareness of
the resources afforded to them to make informed decisions about
their education,” said Denise Belle, assistant director of
the Health Professions Preparation Program with NC-HCAP. “Creating
these seminars has provided students with practical information
they can use to aid them in moving forward along their career paths.”
